A Non-comprehensive list of films that every photographer ought to see.
Films every cinematographer should see, in no particular order.
(Feel free to add on to this list, the more the better)!
Lumiere and Company - short sequence of films made by various directors using the original Lumiere brothers’ camera
Dancer in The Dark-(with BJORK) moving and dark and interesting musical...not like any musical you’ve seen
Sylvia- the new film about sylvia plath, not a great plot but lovely to look at.
Ju Do- a brilliant chinese film with great camera work and a stirring plot.
The Girl on The Bridge- great b/w french film with little dialog, beautifully filmed and a nifty application of magic realism to boot!
Le Belle Noisseuse- French, three hours worth of an artist working and the events surrounding him starting a new series. Sounds not as wonderful as it really is.
Warning- there is some nudity of the model in this one.
32 conversations about one thing- short 1-2 min films. very interesting.
The Pianist- the version with Adrian Brody- Good film on every level
The Piano- The classic by Jane Campion
Amalie- French, how is it they keep making such interestingly quirky films?
City of lost children- french, wacky, weird and a twist on a child’s fairytale. Good for Saturday nights.
Run,Lola,Run- German, kinda of a long video with three different endings- interesting camerawork, good colours
Heaven- Italian language, Czech director, Kyzlowski.
Trois Coleur di Blu- the best Kyzlowski film! It's the first in the triad of films, Blu, Red, White. Blu stars Juliette Binoche. Beautifully filmed a great plotline.
Any film by Wim Wenders
Night on earth- Jim Jarmusch. Four short films about the time between 11pm and 3am. Very touching in parts, in others very funny.
The Girl with the Pearl Earring. Nothing in terms of plot but filmed like looking at moving Vermeers. Really bad painted versions of vermeer’s work in this flick
